New principal

Ken MacCallum, 53, head of design, manufacture and engineering management at Strathclyde University, is the new principal of Bell College, Hamilton.

In council hands Shetland College is to remain in council hands.

It is the only FE college, along with Orkney, that is still run by its local authority. A suggestion that it seek charitable status was rejected by Shetland education committee until the Scottish Office review of college funding, which it is believed would disadvantage the Lerwick centre, is complete.
