Saturday: British Food Fortnight

Apparently we do more than pickled eggs and curry. Visit to find out more. And for a historical glimpse into British food try Nuffield Foundation's Roman Market resource.

Sunday: Bupa Great North Run

The 13.1-mile run takes place today in Newcastle with an expected 54,000 runners. Contributer Matt Kemp has a guide to the psychology of sport and accelerated learning. Make them sweat.

Monday: Talk like a pirate day

This is hugely popular with primary pupils, Jack Sparrow fans and men over a certain age who think they look like Errol Flynn. Treasure-hunting games, recipes, costume ideas and printable materials aplenty online.

Tuesday: UK Business and Aviation day

In the past two years, 86 per cent of companies have promised to reduce their carbon footprint from business travel. Is this because they are greener or broke? An interesting one to debate with your pupils.

Wednesday: International Day of Peace

Peace Day was established by the UN in 1981. Check out Peace Education's excellent resource Sadako's Cranes for Peace, the story of a girl who attempted to make 1,000 origami birds to commemorate Hiroshima.

Thursday: Traitor or Patriot?

On this day in 1776, American Nathan "I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country" Hale was executed by the British for spying, or cringeworthy final words. See Dean1977's resource on capital punishment.

Friday: Man's best friend

The phrase was coined in 1870 when Charles Burden brought a court case against a sheepfarmer who shot his foxhound, Old Drum, dead. Teach young children how to care for their pets with a resource shared by dinx67.
