St John Plessington Catholic College was recognised for its success as the Wirral's top-performing comprehensive - and among the top 25 schools in the country for sustained improvement - when headteacher Tom Quinn was invited to Downing Street to meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Pupils from Birmingham's International School and College have added the city's iconic Bull sculpture to the list of 'celebrities' backing the UN's Really Good School Dinner campaign. The scheme urges children to donate an extra 10p when they buy a school lunch, to pay for a meal for a child in the developing world.

Former England captain Gary Lineker showed off his football skills to young sports fans at Carew Manor School in Surrey, when he launched charity CLIC Sargent's Kick for Children with Cancer annual football fundraiser.

Hylton Red House Primary School in Sunderland explored the final frontier when an "alien spacecraft" landed in its field. The school was evacuated and pupils watched as local community police cordoned off the slime-covered area. The landing is part of a project to encourage cross-curricular writing.

A lowly store cupboard (below) at Hamilton Primary School in Colchester has been transformed into a modern kitchen, giving kids the chance to boost their cooking and healthy living know-how.
