Nursery funding

1st January 1999 at 00:00
THE FIRST instalment of the promised funding towards doubling the number of free nursery places for three-year-olds was announced this week by Margaret Hodge, minister for employment and equal opportunities.

The Pounds 41.5 million, which will be available in 1999-2000, will provide 50,000 extra places at state or private playgroups and nurseries. By 2001-2, 190,000 three-year-olds will have the chance to go to "school" - two-thirds of the age group. The money will go to 50 local authorities which have areas of the greatest social need, said Mrs Hodge.
