NUT backs agencies

31st October 1997 at 00:00
The National Union of Teachers has approved two teacher supply agencies. First Call and Educational Support Services were commended for their vetting procedures and pay policies.

General secretary Doug McAvoy said: "There has been a tremendous growth in the activity of agencies, both in providing supply teachers and in helping recruitment of permanent staff. I am determined to protect teachers from exploitation." The agencies and the union will meet each term to review the agreement.
