One-track minds

At the recent TES Scotland conversation in Inverness, Peter Peacock set off a train of thought when he compared the "predetermined journey" represented by the school curriculum to the railway journey from Inverness to Wick - perhaps pupils might have to move about between different carriages but, essentially, they stay on the same line.

"We're on the right lines, although I'm not sure we would all want to go to Wick," Cathy McAslan, vice-principal of Aberdeen University, ventured.

Drew Millar, Highland Council's education vice-chairman, said he had "probably got on at Wick". What could he have meant?
