One of the worst now among best

Staff, students and governors at Lakes College West Cumbria are celebrating after receiving a glowing report from inspectors.

The college was dubbed one of the worst in the country 10 years ago but has now been favourably reviewed by Ofsted.

The report, published last Friday, praised the college's leadership and development and inspectors were also pleased to see the college respond to the needs of local employers with the introduction of a Foundation degree in nuclear decommissioning this year.

The principal, Pat Glenday, who last week announced she is leaving the college, said: "We are delighted with this Ofsted report. It reflects the hard work and commitment of our governors, staff and students.

"Virtually everything has improved since the last inspection and this report confirms that we are now effectively meeting the learning and training needs of west Cumbria.

"This report doesn't mean we're resting on our laurels. It gives us an objective view of where we stand in relation to other colleges in the UK.

It shows we have made significant improvements over the past four years and are offering a good standard of education and training for local people and employers.

"We will build on our strengths to maintain and develop Lakes College for the benefit of west Cumbria."
