Staff reveal lack of confidence over Nationals

(9 March)

Even the fact that 40 per cent of teachers still don't know what curricular model their school is to use is indicative of inadequate communication. Why does Mike Russell keep saying no school will be implementing in August? He even said in Parliament, teachers have 16 months to prepare. If that was the case, is that not equivalent to a year's delay?

Rob Hands makes the point well; change will always be resisted until we know what the end game is. nobody likes to be led a merry dance, with a blindfold on and no idea of what destination our "leaders" have in mind for us. On the other hand, changes with clear purpose and clearly identifiable benefits are usually embraced.

A health warning (9 March)

I came into teaching late and am halfway through my NQT year. Two weeks ago, for the first time in my life, I went to see a doctor about depression and am now on antidepressants, which have not yet kicked in. Your early morning, panic-stricken awakening is identical to mine. I'm hoping that it will pass once I am through this year, but I'm not convinced. Despite a very supportive department, the expectations seem to be beyond ordinary mortals and you either accept that fact or give up. I had several other careers before this one, but teaching has turned out to be uniquely destructive of one's mental health.
