RESOURCING RE Edited by Cynthia Bartlett and Stanley Thornes Three issues per academic year with ringbinder Pounds 45.50 a year
Resourcing RE aims to provide a flexible way of supporting textbooks and schemes of work for mixed ability in key stages 3 and 4, including GCSE, by providing photocopiable lesson-ready worksheets.
There are eight units per issue and each issue is intended to include a unit based on a topical story, one on a specific festival, one for GCSE short course, two for full GCSE, a theme unit and a discrete religion unit for KS3.
The first issue includes mad cows; Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah; the life of Muhammad; thinking about God; capital punishment; the Anglican Church (misleadingly called Church of England), synagogue and mosque; Hindu beliefs and revision techniques.
Five photocopiable sheets are the maximum provided on any topic, which restricts treatment. Raising Dunblane in a one-liner in the God units will not help the inexperienced teacher deal sensitively with God or Dunblane. How usable the sheets are depends on how they fit a school's syllabus. In their present form, they are disembodied lessons, lacking context.
Alone, they could not adequately cover their topics, so that the claim to provide instant lessons is mitigated by the teacher having to build a series of lessons around them.
On the other hand, the format is attractive, diagrams are clear, bullet points are useful and a growing collection of these could supplement a school's own textbooks or worksheets.
