THE CHARLIE BARBER TREATMENT. Carole Lloyd. Walker pound;3.99.

This is a gentle, measured love story in which the power of Charlie's positive thought thaws out Simon, who is paralysed by grief after his mother's death. The process happens in the space of a half term.

First published in 1989, it hasn't dated because the two main characters are complex but refreshingly uncool. The reader shares Simon's perspective so it seems that little is happening until you notice how far you've moved.
