Pupils at Port Charlotte Primary on Islay will be turning the tables on their parents later this month, when they invite them into the school for a lesson on Viking life.

The 16 pupils who make up Port Charlotte's P34 class will be passing on some of what they learned in September during a day of Viking activities delivered by Kilmartin House Museum.

Museum staff travelled over to Islay from the mainland and spent two days there, working with pupils from four primary schools as well as S1s from the island's only high school.

The museum's Viking Life project was created for the year-long Scotland's Islands festival, which runs until April 2012. Funding came from the Scottish Government and Awards for All, which meant that activities were free.

Caroline Stuart, Port Charlotte's P34 class teacher, says: "Port Ellen Primary hosted the day and we travelled the 20 miles there in the school minibus. The project was very well organised and we were able to plan our Viking topic around the activities museum staff were going to deliver.

"These included Viking cooking over an outdoor fire; the runic alphabet; spinning wool from fleece and music making.

"The activities lasted 30 minutes each and the children were split up and put into mixed groups, so the socialising aspect was another plus in what was a brilliant day."
