Parity with surgeons?

I was interested to see, on the front page of your paper, a suggestion from big British companies that teachers should get a pay rise (TES, September 26).

I heard the school standards minister Stephen Byers speaking in the House of Commons, comparing mistakes made by surgeons and airline pilots to those made by teachers and saying that they should be treated in a similar manner. Can it be presumed that he also intends the teachers be paid at a similar level?
