The conference also heard from Steve Parkinson, a home-grown entrepreneur who has made it big on the other side of the Atlantic, thanks to an excellent start from Liberton High in Edinburgh, followed by stints at Heriot-Watt and Napier universities.

Among the many qualities an entrepreneur needs, Parkinson advised, is "pig-headedness".

This was picked up by Graham Donaldson, who heads HMIE:"In inspection reports, we call that resilience."
