Part-time work offers valuable experience

29th September 2000 at 01:00
Some part-time occupations can be regarded as part of a teacher's primary job ("Double time", Friday, September 15).

As a young and hard-up teacher I did a great deal of private coaching; it still constituted teaching and offered further experience. For many years I reviewed language teaching resources for the education press, which again enhanced my own classroom expertise, as well a earning money. Work as an external examiner, as well as paying fees, gave me helpful insights into the mysteries of the examining board.

No teacher need be apologetic about doing such work of an educational nature.
