Pay up Ann, you are only 85

Some people might think a teacher could be allowed to enjoy her retirement after a long and fruitful career. See the world, write a novel, watch the roses and grandchildren grow, smile wryly as the politicians mess up schools yet again - that kind of thing.

Not the General Teaching Council for England. The GTC thinks teachers should go on teaching till they drop. How else to explain the letter it has sent to Mrs Ann Pugh, of Welwyn Garden City, noting that she is no longer registered with the council but demanding payment of pound;58 for the period from 2003-5, when it says she was?

Her reply to them simply drew attention to her birth date: August 24, 1925.
