Pay differences

I've just started in FE and am working towards my teaching qualification.

Are pay scales the same as in schools?

There are notional national scales, but most colleges pay according to local arrangements. There are many different contracts and pay rates, seemingly designed to save colleges money rather than to offer a decent career structure for staff. The exception is in sixth form colleges which conform to the same pay scales as schools as they compete for the same staff.
