Graham Badman, Avon's director of education and head of external affairs, has been appointed chief executive of the Health Education Authority for England. He will remain in his current post until next April to oversee the handover to the new authorities.

Dr Helen Quigley will become assistant director (education) of the Nuffield Foundation from November 1 in place of Anthony Tomei, who became director of the foundation earlier this year. Dr Quigley has overseen standard spending assessment research and statistics at the Association of Metropolitan Authorities since 1987.

Carol Page, head of Banchory Devenick primary school, Kincardineshire, will become head of Cloverfield Primary School, Bucksburn, Aberdeen, on October 23 upon the retirement of James Couper.
