Kate Ashcroft, head of the school of education, Westminster College, Oxford, has been appointed dean of the faculty of education at the University of West England, Bristol.

Michael Burman, formerly deputy head of Whitmore High School, Harrow, has been appointed to the newly-created post of administrative director of the Union of Liberal and Progressive Synagogues.

Yvonne Graham, head of Lavant House, Chichester, will become head of Clifton High School, Bristol, in January 1996, succeeding Joyce Walters, who is retiring after 10 years in the post.

Emanuel Hurwitz CBE has succeeded Dr Philip Ledger CBE as president of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
