Richard Kemp, deputy head of Danetre School, Daventry, Northamptonshire, has been appointed head of Manhood Community College, Selsey, near Chichester, from September.

David Shepherd, formerly director of continuing education at York University, has joined UHI Limited, the company formed to develop the University of the Highlands and Islands project. He will be responsible for the development of the network's curriculum portfolios.

Education Extra, the charity which supports after-school activities, has conferred its new "Teacher of Distinction" award on Vic Ecclestone, a teacher at Hartcliffe Comprehensive School, Bristol, for his extensive and ambitious programme of after-school provision.

Elizabeth Dorset, a 14-year-old American pupil at Wells Cathedral school, Somerset,has been appointed head girl chorister at the cathedral.
