Richard Howard, a senior adviser for Oxfordshire responsible for curriculum and assessment up to age 14, has been promoted to the post of principal adviser.Professor Martin Harris, vice-chancellor of Manchester University, is to be the next chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals.

Currently CVCP vice-chairman, he will succeed Professor Gareth Roberts on August 1. Hilary Cowell, principal of Filton College, Bristol, will become principal of Nescot, Epsom's college of further and higher education, on September 1 when Dr John Strickson retires after 17 years' service, 11 as principal.Dr Kenneth Pickering, who recently spent two years as professor of theatre and speech at Gonzaga University, USA, and is co-founder of The Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education, has been appointed chief examiner of the London College of Music. He replaces Patricia Finch who has completed her three-year term and will continue as an active member of the senior team of examiners with particular responsibility for music theatre.Fiona Aitken, formerly manager of Netherurd, the Scottish Guide Association training and activity centre, has been appointed youth programme manager of the Guide Association.
