Paul Carter, vice-chair of Kent's education and libraries committee, has taken over as chair from Ronnie Norman, who is joining the Local Government Association as Conservative spokesman.

Wendy Pemberton, head of Regents Park Primary School, Birmingham, has been appointed inspector of literacy for Staffordshire from the summer term.

Jackie Weatherburn, formerly assistant principal (external services) at Harlow College, Essex, recently became vice-principal at Coleg Ceredigion, Aberystwyth.

Vice-Admiral Michael Gretton, who has served in the Royal Navy for nearly 35 years, has been appointed director of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, succeeding Major General Michael Hobbs, who has retired.

Dame Bridget Ogilvie, director of the Wellcome Trust, will become chair of COPUS (the Committee on the Public Understanding of Science) on August 1 succeeding Professor Lewis Wolpert.
