Pinochet victims;Diary

26th March 1999 at 00:00
GENERAL Pinochet has claimed one last victim - the National Union of Teachers. The union was due to lobby Parliament on Wednesday in protest at Green Paper proposals for performance-related pay.

Alas, it was called off - partly on police advice. It would have coincided with the Law Lords' verdict on the Chilean dictator's extradition; the Bill didn't want bolshy teachers getting mixed up in the inevitable demonstrations.

The lobby can now count itself among Pinochet's disappeared.
