Peter Galloway, one of Scotland's foremost headteachers, topped the New Year honours list of those recognised for services to Scottish education, becoming a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). Only one teacher is honoured.

Mr Galloway, head of Trinity Academy in Edinburgh, is a trailblazer for the international and enterprise aspects of education.

On the next rung of the honours ladder, OBE (officer), recognition goes to Margery Browning, formerly acting chief inspector in HMIE; Bronwen Cohen, chief executive of Children in Scotland; Isabella Lind, head of Ravenscraig Primary in Greenock; and Shelagh Rae, former director of education in Renfrewshire.

Philip Thorne, principal music teacher at St David's High in Dalkeith, becomes an MBE.

In further education, an OBE went to Ian Miller, chair of the National Bureau for Students with Disabilities, and formerly principal of North Glasgow College.

New MBEs in FE are John Cassidy, programme co-ordinator at Cardonald College in Glasgow; Angus Macleod, head of the school of construction at Inverness College; James Nimmo, director of corporate services at Jewel and Esk Valley College; and Anthony Walker, director of student services at Barony College.
