Plato goes to pacifist

The Teaching Awards 2006 took place this week at City Hall in Cardiff, with the BBC's Colette Hume at the helm, and the keynote speech delivered by Jane Davidson, minister for education, lifelong learning and skills, writes Nerys Lloyd-Pierce.

Geraint Rees, of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr in Cardiff, a lifelong pacifist, gleefully pointed out that his award for secondary head of the year was sponsored by the Royal Air Force.

The 12 winners are: Teacher of the year (primary) Lynsey McCrohan, Mount Street infants, Brecon; Head of the year (primary): Ann Davies, Ysgol y Dderi, Lampeter; Head of the year (secondary): Geraint Rees, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr, Cardiff; Teacher of the year (secondary): Mark Batten, Bassaleg comprehensive, Newport; Ted Wragg award for lifetime achievement: Dianne Ham, Glyn Derw high, Cardiff; Outstanding new teacher: Tabitha Sawyer, Ysgol Emmanuel, Rhyl, Clwyd; Special needs teacher: Tracy Muir, Litchard juniors, Bridgend; Teaching assistant: Sian Maxwell, Ysgol Llanddulas, Abergele; Award for healthy schools: Lynn Ball, Talgarth primary, Brecon; Enterprise: Andrew Winn, Blackwood comprehensive, Blackwood; DfES award for governor: Graham Down, The Dell JI School, Chepstow; Assembly government award for the promotion of Welsh language in a school: Gillian Evans, Ysgol Penybryn, Gwynedd.
