* The chief inspector has highlighted the extent of failure among independent schools. It is therefore important that everyone is clear that independent schools fall into two groups: the 1,280 which are members of the Independent Schools Council and the 913 which are not.

No criticism is made of ISC schools which are inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate on a six-year cycle with published reports. Full details of those that carry our badge of quality can be found on www.iscis.uk.net.
