THE Daily Telegraph, staunch supporter of our fine public schools, is also campaigning ferociously for the future of our state grammar schools.

Now, it seems, the paper has completely ceased to distinguish between them, if last week's league tables are anything to go by. Grammars and selective independents were denoted by the same code.

But then, critics of grammar schools have always said they give posh families a private education for free.
