Excellence celebrated as shortlist is revealed for TES FE Awards

The shortlist for the third TES FE Awards is announced today. It was a tough task, but the hundreds of entries received across 13 categories have been whittled down to 71 finalists. The winners will be unveiled at a ceremony on 28 February at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel in London.

As well as the winners of the flagship FE Provider of the Year and FE Leader of the Year titles, the recipient of the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award will also be revealed on the night.

One of the star performers at the 2012 awards was Exeter College, which claimed the Outstanding Leadership in Learning and Skills and Outstanding FE Provider of the Year gongs.

Assistant principal Malcolm Walsh said winning the awards had been an "honour" for the whole college community. "Students, parents, staff, governors, partners and all those with an interest feel a sense of pride in what has been achieved," he added.

Ian Ashman, principal of Hackney Community College in East London, which won the 2012 Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community Award, said that the title had brought lasting benefits to the institution, even after the end of the London 2012 Olympics.

"We were thrilled to be announced the winning college," he said. "The award has helped us to raise the profile of the results of our work, including the great achievements of members of our local communities in playing their own roles in the `greatest show on earth'."

Ann Mroz, editor of TES, said: "In the week that rising standards in the FE sector were acknowledged in Ofsted's annual report, we are delighted to recognise those individuals, teams and institutions that have demonstrated their commitment to excellence. We received a high number of entries and the finalists all richly deserve their success."
