Libby Purves' "Last Word" (TES, March 2) on different attitudes towards success in the USA and the UK reminded me of a story told (I think) by Michael Caine. He had mansions in both Los Angeles and London that needed decrating. The LA painter said: "One day, I'm going to live in a house like this." The London painter said: "No one should live in a house like this."
