HILARY Vaughan's letter (TES,October 8) about the contempt shown for teacher assessment data is eloquent testimony to professional concern at the Government's lack of trust.

For this Government and its advisers the measurable and testable are the only expression of educational standards and quality. How can a "world-class education system" be created without trusting teachers' judgments ?
