WORD PROBLEMS. By Leonie Ewing and Ian Ward. pound;12. QED Publications. Tel: 01543 416353. www.qed.uk.com.

We all know how difficult children can find it to tackle a problem that isn't given as a straightforward "sum" - the authors of this A4 spiral bound, 130-page volume point out that asked: "A shepherd has 19 shep and 13 goats, how old is the shepherd?" many children will produce the answer 32.

Word Problems offers a series of structured worksheets for use at key stages 1 and 2. I prefer to approach this type of question orally through discussion.
