The battle to build a new Balfron High School in the Secretary of State's Stirling constituency stepped up a gear this week with publication of a campaign document by the school board, which lists the options for the future as "contraction and squalor", "firefighting and piecemeal improvement", or a replacement building.

Jim Fleming, Balfron's headteacher, said the board would consider the Government's private finance initiative provided control of the school remained with the local authority.
