Pupils pick quizzes, popcorn and parties to relax

Looking for ways to relax during test week? Teachers at Rodford primary school, in Yate, south Gloucestershire, offered their 46 Year 6 pupils the chance to do anything they wanted - and they chose a test.

"There will be questions on music, Harry Potter, sport, general knowledge," said Natalie Morgan who has drawn up a timetable of activities with colleague Louise Lund. "They write down the answers and the winner will get a prize."

As well as the quiz, the children also requested a sports afternoon, arts afternoon, to make popcorn and watch a DVD and have a talent show and party on Friday.

Miss Morgan said: "The pupils have been very busy up until now. We did practice papers in January and March and during that second paper we identified weak areas and taught them within the literacy, numeracy and science lessons. They have each had a revision book. So if they know it now, they know it and if they don't, they don't.

"The stress is horrible. We feel they are working hard enough and they need a bit of a rest. We know there are ones who will go home and revise."

Last year 84 per cent of 11-year-olds at the school reached the expected level 4 in English and 79 per cent in maths, above the national average.

But not everything that pupils wanted made it into the timetable for Sats week. "We managed to incorporate most things," said Miss Morgan. "But not the person who wanted to go to the shops."
