* Pupils in small schools do no better or worse educationally than their peers in larger schools, according to the inspectorate in Wales, Karen Thornton writes. But while small schools benefit from stronger parental support, teachers find it "challenging" to match learning needs in mixed-ability groups. Leadership is often less effective, in part because heads carry heavy teaching loads.
