Black former astronaut Charles Bolden, who piloted the space shuttle Discovery when the Hubble space telescope was deployed, told a group of students this week that a combination of corporal punishment, dedicated teachers, strict but inspirational parents and sheer determination enabled him to overcome prejudice and succeed despite his upbringing during segregation in the southern United States.
