Until today, mystery surrounded the identity of the first External Complaints Adjudicator for The Man Who Inspects Schools For The Queen. Unless you are an inquisitive Guardian reader, that is.

You see, last Friday Chris Woodhead was granted right-to- reply space in the paper, countering a critical column the week before. He wrote a short piece, but added that readers who wanted a point-by-point refutation could contact his office. Those who did so got a 13-point analysis. Astonishingly, point 12 contained full details of the appointment of Elaine Rassaby - which even MPs had been told they must wait for until today, when the appointment was to be officially announced. Odd, or what?
