The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is not the first film to explore the Holocaust, but it is the first to see it through the eyes of a young German boy largely shielded from the reality of the Second World War. This unforgettable tale is based on John Boyne's award-winning novel and follows the friendship that forms between Bruno, the son of a Nazi commandant, and Shmuel, a Jewish boy held captive in a concentration camp. Though the two are separated by a barbed wire fence, their friendship grows and their lives become inescapably intertwined.
Directed by Mark Herman (Brassed Off, Little Voice) and starring David Thewlis (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Vera Farmiga and Rupert Friend, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a poignant medium for studying one of last century's darkest chapters.
