Redundancy rights demand

The Association for College Management chose the Trades Union Congress's annual conference this week to call for improved redundancy rights for further education staff.

Its says consultation with unions should be compulsory even when relatively small numbers of jobs are at stake.

Britain's redundancy laws should be changed to provide more protection to individuals and force colleges to consult properly with trade unions, according to ACM, the trade union representing college managers.

Peter Pendle, ACM general secretary said: "There is absolutely no obligation on an employer to consult with a trade union over redundancies unless that employer intends to dismiss 20 or more individuals in a 90 day period."
