Republicans block duchess visit

THE Duchess of Abercorn was forced to call off a visit to St Mary's primary school, Pomeroy, in Northern Ireland on Monday following threats of protests from republicans.

After the cancellation of the visit, which had been lanned as part of an all-Irish writing competition, Sinn Fein councillor Finbarr Conway said: "The people of Pomeroy are proud Irish people and don't feel any allegiance to the British symbols of the British Monarch."
