What the lesson is about

This is a range of structured, whole-class activities covering art and design, English and science, for pupils with multi-sensory impairments and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Aims: pupils will -

- improve their sensory development.

Getting started

You will need a recording of Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev, a jungle backdrop for the classroom, soft farm animal toys, animal mask stencils, finger paints, glue, tasters of tropical fruits, a copy of As Quiet as a Mouse by Hilda Offen and soft toys for each animal mentioned in the book.

As the pupils arrive, play Peter and the Wolf. Form a circle and get the children to sing "Old MacDonald Had a Farm", and to hold and feel the soft toys as each animal is mentioned.

Help students cut out and decorate a mask. Hand out tropical fruits to pupils to look at, feel, smell and taste.

Taking it further

Ask the pupils to put on their decorated masks. Hand out the rest of the soft toys and read As Quiet as a Mouse to the class, encouraging pupils to join in the words and actions of the book using their soft toys. Finish by getting the class to sing "The Animal Fair".
