Rhyming couplets

Flip-A-Rhythm. By Sheila Nelson. Boosey Hawkes Pounds 7.95. 9771 The simple idea of this book is to print two 4-bar rhythms in 44 time on each page and then to chop the page horizontally between them.

The resulting half-pages can then be flipped to create hundreds of complementary pairs of rhythms. These can be clapped or tapped or played to develop reading skills. They might be performed in partnership with a teacher or used as an individual challenge, one hand against another. Latter pages go on to use semiquavers, dotted quavers, tied notes and rests, and the book can be turned over to produce a similar set of pages in 34 time. It's a bit intricate for use with a whole class but very useful for instrumental teachers.
