Rising star: Marilyn Marshall

4th September 2009 at 01:00
  • Where?
    • She's a teacher at St Bega's CofE Primary School in Cumbria.

      • Why?
        • In 2000, Marilyn decided to take a well-earned career break, put herself on the supply list and spend more time with her children. One of her supply jobs was in St Bega's - a small, rurally isolated and deprived primary school with just 42 pupils.

Marilyn had wide-ranging skills, having spent more than 30 years in education at a number of schools and her enthusiasm and dedication to the pupils led Jacqui Wilson, the school's headteacher, to ask Marilyn to stay on and become a permanent full-time teacher.

Marilyn's passion to make a difference in her pupils' lives led her to help develop a number of strategies to improve literacy in the school, including training schemes, new monitoring and assessing plans and cross- phase teaching.

Being given additional responsibility in a small school, Marilyn believed headship wasn't beyond her so when Jacqui encouraged Marilyn to complete the NPQH, she applied.

          • Nominated by:
            • Jacqui Wilson, headteacher, who says: "She is not frightened to have a go and is such a safe pair of hands. She makes a huge difference to our school. Marilyn will make a fantastic head one day, although I'll be sorry to see her go - it would be hard to fill her shoes."

Thanks to the National College for School Leadership for nominating this week's rising star. Send in your one to watch to features@tes.co.uk including 300 words and a picture.
