Tommy MacKay, the noted educational psychologist, has an affinity with the south of France. He shared an experience with his fellow brains recently, recalling a schedule which required him to return from Nice to be at a conference in Aberdeen the following morning, flying via London and Glasgow to catch the last train north.

Although he arrived in Glasgow looking his beach-clad best, his suitcase didn't. There was nothing for it but to proceed: "If you want to confirm every prejudice society has about psychologists, try giving a keynote in Aberdeen in November in trainers, shorts and a T-shirt, especially a Motorhead T-shirt," he said.
