Russell takes charge

18th December 2009 at 00:00

Mike Russell has been named as the new Scottish education secretary following the Scottish National Party's (SNP) first reshuffle since it came to power in 2007. Mr Russell has taken over from Fiona Hyslop who was demoted to Mr Russell's former role as culture minister. Mr Russell, a one-time leadership rival to Alex Salmond, was handed the role after the SNP leader said a "fresh look" was needed on education.
