Sad girls, politicos and manuals

7th January 2000 at 00:00
I AM disappointed at your acceptance of an advert for Hayne's car repair manuals.

At a time when a lot of people are talking about raising the self-esteem of the teaching profession the Hayne's advert reminds teachers of how little they are paid compared with many other professionals.

Yes, I and many other teachers have saved a lot of money by fixing our own cars. However, this has been through necessity, i.e. nt being able to afford the alternative.

If teachers were paid a fair wage we would be able to spend more time relaxing and recovering in order to prepare ourselves better for our stressful job, instead of worrying about home and car DIY.

We are relatively poorly paid, there is no need to rub our faces in the dirt.
