Safety checks kick off

16th October 2009 at 01:00

The controversial vetting and barring scheme - another safety check for all those who work with children - is now underway.

New employees can start to register in July 2010, they will have to be registered to work by November 2010 and all existing workers will have to join the scheme by April 2011.

It covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland. A separate but aligned scheme will be implemented in Scotland in 2010.
