Safety first

How could you publish such a contrived photograph, which breaks so many laboratory safety rules (page 1, TES, August 25)? Heating that test tube using a Bunsen burner without looking at what you are doing is a recipe for disaster.

While these two girls may not suffer academically by going to a co-educational school, it appears they may well suffer from accidents caused through sloppy safety procedures, including the wearing of loose-fitting jewellery - particularly bracelets, which could so easily get caught on the jumble of equipment in front of them.
