Saracen takes on college

TAKING time off from running up the Travelator, and knocking opponents off pedestals, Saracen, from the television family gameshow Gladiators, has set himself a new challenge.

Saracen, pictured below, whose real name is Mike Lewis, has signed up for an Introduction to Information Technology course at Lewisham College in south-east London.

Mr Lewis, who is a firefighter in Brixton when he is not taking part in the programmes, was approached by the Campaign for Learning to help them to encourage people to persevere with education.

He was so impressed with their work he decided to sign up at his local college.

In a chat, Richard Chambers, the college's vice principal, revealed that his knowledge of computers was not very good. So Saracen said Mr Chambers would have to do the course alongside him.

Sarah Pugh, executive assistant to the principal said: "We hope that when young people are watching the Gladiators, they'll say 'Come on mum, you can do that sort of thing' - the learning that is, not necessarily the jousting from 20 feet or hanging from rings in the ceiling.
