* The Government has promised to rebuild or refurbish every secondary school in England over the next 15 years

* The Building Schools for the Future project is starting work on this, with 180 new schools being built by 2007 at a cost of more than pound;2 billion

* In Scotland 300 schools will be built or refurbished by 2009

* 95 per cent of teachers think the school environment has an effect on how children learn

* Some schools have seen GCSE results improve by a third after moving into new buildings

* Well-designed schools don't have to be new: even small improvements to lighting, colour or furniture can make a difference
