School sackings

MORE than 600 teachers have been dismissed under the Government's new fast-track disciplinary procedure, schools minister, Estelle Morris has revealed.

The estimate - which falls well short of chief inspector Chris Woodhead's claim that there were 15,000 incompetent teachers - is based on a survey of local education authorities by the National Employers' Organisaion for School Teachers.

The survey, which covered 116 local authorities for three school terms ending with spring 1999, showed that more than 3,000 teachers have been subject to some sort of capability procedures. A total of 194 showed sufficient improvement and 439 cases were still pending, Ms Morris told Tory education spokesperson James Clappison.
