Need more science labs? Refurbishing existing rooms can cost less than half the price of building a block, according to new guidance.

Recognising the greater autonomy of school managers, the Department for Education and Emploment has prepared a series of building bulletins aimed at teachers and governors as well as architects.

Building Bulletin 80, Science Accommodation in Secondary Schools: A Design Guide (pound;1895), deals with all aspects of planning laboratories and prep rooms, with case studies and notes on health and safety requirements.

Also available, from The Stationery Office, are bulletins on acoustics in schools (pound;12) and access for the disabled (pound;14.95). A guide to equipment purchasing is due soon, as well as guidance on fire safety and security.
